Geek Like Me, Comic Con Edition: "Teen Wolf," Gay Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, More
There's only one time when people look forward to being mobbed by sweaty nerds in the dog days of a Southern California summer: The San Diego Comic-Con, starting July 18. It's the granddaddy of comic-book conventions that's evolved to include gaming, sci-fi and blockbuster movies. (Its big enough that the cast of The Avengers paid a visit before the film's release.)
Here are some of the bigger items expected to be announced:
One item already announced is a funky new take on Wonder Woman from DC Nation, the company's animation branch. Instead of bullets and bracelets, we see Diana as a kind of Amazonian Pam Greer, kickin' ass in her Invisible Mustang.
Speaking of summer heat, the hotties of MTV’s Teen Wolf will be prowling around the convention: With the steamy kiss between Danny and Ethan, fans will no doubt bug the cast for more details. The only question: What to call the couple? Ethanny? Dannthan?
If you're trapped on the East Coast, there is one thing you can rub in everyone's face: A New York screening of The Fifth Element on a yacht done up to look like the luxury space liner, Fhloston Paradise. Sign-up now before space (not outer) runs out!
Are you a diehard PC gamer? Maybe you’re game-curious? In either case. get yourself over (metaphorically) to the Steam Summer Sale. Powered by Valve, Steam is one of the biggest and best outlets for PC gaming—and they have a big sale up. Prices are so low, you’d expect some guy in a cowboy hat to tell you he's "craaazy." Highlights of the sale currently include Bioshock Infinite (above) The Walking Dead game and indie darling Fez, with several more titles dropping price every day until July 22.
Justice League #22, starts the long-teased Trinity War saga pitting the Justice League against the Justice League of America against the Justice League Dark. Want something a bit sweeter? BOOM! Studios has released the Adventure Time spinoff Candy Capers, with fan fave Cinnamon Bun and Peppermint Butler taking center stage.
Amazing Spider-Man’s astonishingly adorable lead, Andrew Garfield, shared our gay-geek fantasy when he told Entertainment Weekly he thought maybe Peter Parker should have a same-sex romance, since the movie hasn't introduced Spidey's longtime flame, Mary Jane Watson. “I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality?" Garfield posed. "It's hardly even groundbreaking! So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?" Garfield suggested Fruitvale Station star Michael B. Jordan as MJ!
Hmm, The Amazingly Bisexual Spider-Man has a nice ring to it. But I'd like to see a Spider-Man/Batman relationship. It'd probably look like this, though:
IN TECH:
Atlas, a new humanoid robot from Boston Dynamics, is kinda scary looking.
