"Playboy" Honors Trans Awareness Week With Geena Rocero

The transgender model and activist was also the magazine's August 2019 Playmate.

Media outlets are honoring Transgender Awareness Week 2019, but one publication going above and beyond might surprise you: Playboy.

With the annual awareness week as its peg, the magazine has joined forces with trans supermodel, speaker, and activist Geena Rocero to spotlight five prominent trans people effecting change for LGBTQ people nationwide. Rocero's picks include activist and commentator Ashlee Marie Preston, groundbreaking actress Candis Cayne, writer and activist Tiq Milan, musician Nomi Ruiz, and American Civil Liberties Union legal counsel Chase Strangio.

On Instagram, Rocero thanked the decades-old publication for its allyship and for continuously supporting the trans and gender-nonconforming community.

This summer, the 35-year-old model and advocate posed for the magazine as its August 2019 Playmate, joining the ranks of French model Ines Rau, who became Playboy's first trans Playmate back in 2017.

Rocero's Playboy spread also marked the first time an openly transgender Asian-Pacific Islander model posed for the magazine's coveted centerfold.

"This Playboy Playmate honor is another moment that I will never forget," Rocero wrote on Instagram after her feature hit stands, recalling the pivotal TED Talk she gave in 2014 that changed her life forever. "I will always know that expressing my unapologetic love for my self, my body, my vulnerability, my journey, my dreams, and my hustle is my ultimate power!”

Watch Rocero and other transgender pioneers in the modeling industry strut their stuff in Logo's Made to Model: Trans Beauty in Fashion below. Then head over to Playboy.com to see its Trans Awareness Week feature.
