High School Decides Gender-Fluid Teen Can Run For Homecoming Queen After All

Anthony Martinez was initially told he and his boyfriend couldn't run for homecoming couple.

A gender-fluid high school student from Orlando has been approved to run for homecoming queen after initially being told he was ineligible.

Anthony Martinez planned to run as queen and his boyfriend, Joncarlo Medina, would run as king. But Principal John McHale told him he couldn't because he was a male.

“I started crying,” Martinez told ABC affiliate WFTV 9. “It made me really emotional considering how hard I was trying to be queen."

After news reports on the policy, though, a spokesperson from Cypress Creek High said the school was changing its mind.

McHale "made what he thought was an appropriate decision at the time," but that the school's anti-discrimination policy prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

“If this child wants to do this, he’s more than welcome to,” school rep Kathy Marsh told The Huffington Post. “We’re fine with that.”
