Project Angel Food will present the late George Michael with the Elizabeth Taylor Humanitarian Award at the 27th Annual Project Angel Food Gala next month in honor of his many charitable efforts throughout his career.
The nonprofit works to nourish sick people battling a critical illness, and said in a statement that Michael made a donation at the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1993, a time the charity says it needed him the most.
“Struggling to make payroll while sacrificing internally for the good of the community, Project Angel Food received an unsolicited donation, placed on the organization’s doorstep,” the charity said. “Contained in an envelope was a check and note from George Michael, for the amount of $25,000.”
The organization says Michael continued to contribute the same amount every single year until he died on Christmas day last year.
Adam Lambert will perform a medley of Michael’s greatest hits at the gala, which will take place on August 19 in Los Angeles.
