George Takei Announces He's Running For Congress Against Devin Nunes

But is he fooling?

Oh, my! Look who's going into politics.

Out actor and activist George Takei, best known for his work as Sulu in the original Star Trek TV series, announced today on Twitter that he's planning to run for Congress next year—specifically to unseat California Representative Devin Nunes, a Republican and the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

"Well, the cat's out of the bag it seems," he wrote. "Let's do this! #Takei2018."

One of Donald Trump's loudest critics on social media, the gay icon linked to a Daily Buzz post in which he's quoted as saying, "With what is going on now in the country, I couldn’t stand by any longer merely as a citizen. I knew I had to take a bigger stand. So that’s why I’m running for Congress. My hope is to challenge Devin Nunes for his seat in 2018."

Of course, the timing of Takei's announcement is a bit suspect considering today is April Fools' Day, when it's almost impossible to take anyone too seriously. Daily Buzz points out, however, that Takei, a Los Angeles resident, did recently purchase a home in California's Tulare County with his husband.

But joke or not, at least one person is totally buying it. "I hope you can count me as one of your early endorsers," tweeted actor and activist Mark Ruffalo. "This is great news!"

Nunes, who has served California's 22nd congressional district since 2003, has been criticized for his investigation into possible collusion between Trump and Russia during the 2016 election.

The New York Times recently reported that White House officials helped provide Nunes with intelligence reports that showed Trump's involvement in foreign surveillance by American spy agencies, writing that the revelation "is likely to fuel criticism that the intelligence chairman has been too eager to do the bidding of the Trump administration while his committee is supposed to be conducting an independent investigation of Russia’s meddling in the presidential election."

UPDATE: Yup, Takei just tweeted that it was just a joke. Sigh.
