"[It's] a lot of clinging on cliffs and getting smashed against rocks."

“It doesn’t have that element that made Star Trek — Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek — what it was,” said Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original television series, in six of the feature films and in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager — which is to say, if anyone would know, it would be Takei.

“It looks like a terrific action/adventure movie,” he continued (note: shade). “A lot of clinging on cliffs and getting smashed against rocks. So it should be a very successful Star Trek movie.”

His final takeaway:

“I didn’t, in the previews, note any of the substance of what made Gene’s Star Trek so engaging — the commentary on social justice [and] political realities of the time.”
