It’s time to brush the wet leaves off your favorite mink: Bill Hader and Fred Armisen are doing their best Big and Little Edie Beale in a new mockumentary series coming to IFC.
Executive produced by Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers, Documentary Now! is a new six-episode series for the network that spoofs some of the most famous documentaries in filmdom. Grey Gardens, Meyers told EW, “seemed like a natural choice, because when Fred and Bill play women, they do it with real integrity–they don’t do it for cheap or easy laughs.”
The late-night host added that “it’s really fun to watch Fred and Bill play women who are holding on to this idea of their own nobility.”
We’re sure they’ll treat the Beales with all due reverence—even if they did name their mockumentary “Sandy Passage.”
“The wardrobe department loved that episode,” recalls Hader.”They would put sweatpants on my head, and I was like, ‘What is this? This is so insane.’ And then I watched Grey Gardens and, yeah, she has, like, sweatpants on her head.”
Armisen and Hader have played pretty convincing ladies before—Armisen on SNL and Portlandia.
And Hader in The Skeleton Twins.
We can’t wait.
Documentary Now! premieres August 20 on IFC.
