Explore The Wonder Of Ghostly San Francisco

With its narrow winding streets, magnificent but slightly worn buildings and parks, foggy skies and bohemian yet highly educated population, San Francisco’s old world atmosphere and newworld attitude make it one of America’s most culturally rich and intellectually enticing cities. But it’s not all delicious local food and long days drinking in the park. San Francisco has a longhistory of violence and confusion- the Zodiac Killer, earthquakes, underworld Chinatown, crazedhippies, the cruelty of Alcatraz – that this city of love and peace would like to forget.

Sutro Baths: These grey, windswept ruins at the edge of the sea are like relics ofthe Roman Empire that one would expect to see in Eastern Europe. Built in the 1890’s, this large public bathhouse featured salt water and fresh water tanks, 500 dressing rooms, a clubhouse andamphitheater. After burning down in the 1960’s, it is said many human sacrifices and strange ceremonies were performed in the abandoned tunnels and caves that once made up the complex. Now a beautiful Cyprus covered park, visitors can balance on ruins in the water, climb in thecaves and perhaps see the sprits that are said to throw lighted candles into the crashing sea at night.

Queen Anne: This gilded, velvet draped Victorian bed and breakfast indowntown San Francisco was once a girl’s school run by Miss Mary Lake. Apparently the headmistress loved her job and still watches over people in room 410, tucking them in tight at night, tidying up, and unpacking luggage. She is said to appear in the mirrors and hallways around the hotel, giving guests at the nightly sherry and cookies tea in the creepy, brick-brackfilled parlor lots to talk about.

Cameron House: In the dangerous and volatile Chinatown of the 1800’s many Chinese women were forced into prostitution, crime and indentured servitude. A lady named Donalinda Cameron tried to save many of these young women by running a mission house that hid hundreds from would be slavers in a secret basement which could only be reached by anunderground passage. The house caught (or some say was intentionally set) on fire and many of the hidden women died. The victims are said to haunt the house, even though charms are hung over the still-sealed basement to warn them away.

A woman in white with long brown hair, whose child supposedly drowned, is often seen wailing and searching for her lost child at thelakes edge. A ghostly policeman has also been reported pulling over motorists in the park andissuing them tickets (hey, at least you don’t have to pay them!).
