(L-R) Willie Robertson, Phil Robertson and Si Robertson of Duck Dynasty
Is anyone surprised that Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson holds some really backward views when it comes to gay people? What’s maybe more surprising is GQ Magazine devoting a profile to him. Or maybe not, since the A&E show is such a massive hit. The Duck Dynasty season four premiere nabbed 11.8 million viewers – a record for a cable TV reality series. Yes, while we’re are all watching Project Runway, Top Chef and RuPaul’s Drag Race the rest of the country seems to be enchanted with some duck hunters in Louisiana.
But before you too fall sway to their folksy charm, here’s what Phil Robertson says in the January GQ issue:
“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”
And later in the article:
“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
No use expecting an apology from Robertson. But the real question is how will A&E respond? Or any of the hundreds of companies that want to partner with the Duck Dynasty stars for advertising?
GLAAD has reached out to A&E for comment.
