GLAAD and Kacey Musgraves Join Forces to Celebrate Spirit Day

Your Yee Haw Queen has done it again.

Put on your neon cowboy hat and dust off your spurs because you might soon be headed to see Kacey Musgraves in New York.

GLAAD has announced that your Yee Haw Queen will commemorate this year's Spirit Day by donating two VIP seats to GLAAD for either of her sold-out concerts October 15 and 16 at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. By making a donation to benefit GLAAD’s work with LGBTQ youth, fans can enter for a chance to win those tickets and meet Kacey backstage.

Aside from being a fierce musician, the Golden Hour girl has been a vocal ally to the LGBTQ community, with her song “Follow Your Arrow” becoming an anthem for queer fans. She delivered a country disco track Gay Twitter™ deemed the Song of Summer in 2018, and she even sashayed down the runway as a guest judge on the latest season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. She also dedicated her song "Rainbow" to the LGBTQ community.

In addition to joining forces with the Grammy winner, GLAAD has also announced the release of a new children's book, Spirit Day: A Book About Spreading Joy, illustrated by Joy Yang. It's the latest title in an ongoing series of LGBTQ-inclusive books teaching the children about Spirit Day and how to stop bullying.

"From the world’s biggest stars and athletes to local classrooms and pastors, Spirit Day has become a megaphone for allies to send a unified message of acceptance and support to LGBTQ youth each year,” says Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of GLAAD, in a statement. “In today’s divisive culture and political climate, LGBTQ people and allies need to be louder than ever to outshine bullies and tell young people that they will always be supported just as they are."

Spirit Day, an initiative that launched in 2010 and coincides with National Bullying Prevention Month, occurs Thursday, October 17. Supporters are asked to wear purple to show their solidarity with LGBTQ youth around the country, since some 85.2% of queer youth report being verbally harassed at school, and more than 57% report feeling unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation.
