This Adorable New Children's Book Is Perfect for Lesbian Visibility Day

"Maiden & Princess" is a kid-friendly tale about two queer women of color who fall in love.

GLAAD has timed its latest children's book release to Lesbian Visibility Day 2019, announcing the heartwarming and kid-friendly Maiden & Princess this Friday, April 26.

In a follow-up to last May's Prince & Knight, a similar children's fantasy tale about a gay couple, Maiden & Princess follows two women of color who find love against all odds in a faraway kingdom.

The book features full-color illustrations by Becca Human, a gender non-conforming artist and illustrator, and is co-written by screenwriter Isabel Galupo and Prince & Knight author Daniel Haack. The book was also published in collaboration with Little Bee Books, a children's publishing house.

In a statement to NewNowNext, GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis advocated for the importance of LGBTQ representation for readers and media consumers of all ages.

"Children’s books are essential tools in encouraging awareness, kindness, and acceptance at an early age," she says. “GLAAD is committed to advancing positive representation of LGBTQ lives, experiences, and stories, and the release of Maiden & Princess is a shining example of how we can help to accelerate acceptance among young audiences.”

Maiden & Princess also follows the release of GLAAD's Jack (not Jackie), a story about a young child who learns to accept their trans brother. Maiden & Princess is the third release from GLAAD's ongoing partnership with Little Bee Books.
