RECAP: How Gay Was ‘Glee?’

Just a butch all bro sing-along

We know when you ask, “what’s so gay about Glee?” the obvious answer is, “everything.”  But we’re here to break down the queerest bits of Glee into bit-sized morsels for your enjoyment.  Think of us as your gay cheat sheet to Glee fandom.

This week we had a lot of straight marriage talk, and straight romance talk, and just straight people being straight, so the gay was few and far between, but we found it for you anyway.

1. What’s on your head, Kurt Hummel?  At this point it should be a standing category.  During Rachel’s big number, (“Without You”) we were treated to Kurt Hummel winter headwear in the form of some sort of fashion fur cap.  It sort of marred the adorable shared look between Kurt and Blaine during the romantic song!

2. The first time Santana ever saw Britt’s face! As the girls sang “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” they flashed back to the first moment they saw their current love, and so we got to finally see Santana’s realization moment with Britt. They’re in the locker room and Britt cutely sips from her water bottle and smiles as Santana looks utterly smitten.  We don’t always buy these two as a romantic pairing (sacrilege, but the chemistry isn’t always there!) but in that moment we swooned.

3. Kurt Hummel plays Rizzo. As the group payed homage to Grease in the opening “Summer Nights” number, Kurt appeared with the gaggle of gals to intone Rizzo’s classic “Cause he sounds like a drag line.”  Now if only we could get some “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” or “Look At Me, I’m Sandra Dee” from him.

3.5. Puck kissing Sam’s hand.  We don’t know what to make of this randomness from the Grease scene when Puck and Blaine are begging Sam to tell them specifics about his fling with Mercedes.  Wonderful acting choice, Mark Salling.  We salute you!

4. Everything that happened in that pool.  The sheer fact that McKinley has a pool, and the budget for a synchronized swimming team astounds us, and then the Glee kids of course had to use it for a big flashy dance number to help Will propose to Emma.  Blaine gets a stand out mention for his twirls and air kisses during the scenes, but everyone was doing their best to make it a totally camp experience.

5.  RACHEL’S DADS.  Okay, we’re cheating as they weren’t actually in this episode, but DURING this episode TVLine released the most anticipated Glee casting news.  Jeff Goldblum and Brian Stokes will be playing Mr. and Mr. Berry in an upcoming episode.  We’re beside ourselves with excitement to finally find out more about the two men that spawned Rachel Berry.
