'Glee' Recap: 'Shooting Star' and the Klaine Factor

Normally in the space we recount the queerest, but this week's episode didn't really leave much room for fanciful queer fixation, a first for 'Glee.'  That's because it dealt with guns in schools head on, in a striking interpretation of what would happen if a gun went off in McKinley.  Instead of our usual gay fare, we're diving into a more interpretive post about one singular moment that stands out for our beloved Klaine in the midst of this episode.

In the middle of a business-as-usual week on 'Glee' the club hears two gunshots fired from down the hallway and go into lockdown, descending into relative silence while they wait out the unknown. Eventually ever-the-director Artie brings out his camera phone and films the club members around them, who each leave teary-eyed messages to their loved ones. Except Blaine.

Why doesn't Blaine say anything to Artie's camera? Schue has framed this week's lesson as embracing Last Chance and not going on without saying what you want to your loved ones. Blaine is the only person with a romantic interest  further away than the hall bathroom, yet he says nothing.

Stylistically, having Blaine stay silent to Kurt served a storytelling purpose, keeping everyone's messages on a singular and non-romantic topic. Having him vocalize his love for Kurt, however logical it would be for him to do so, disrupts the narrative. But why would Blaine care about the narrative?  This episode is about emotional response, fear and family. So we must look at it afresh, and realize that Blaine's muteness on Kurt reflects something different. He isn't saying goodbye because they've promised to never say goodbye. Blaine has faces his own demons, and Kurt has faced great loss and near-loss already.  Blaine verbalizing the possibility of he himself being another possible loss for Kurt is unthinkable.  The only action we do see from Blaine is texting someone, although we don't know who.

Various Glee set sources have tweeted about Chris Colfer and Darren Criss filming together in upcoming episodes, and Ryan Murphy himself tweeted a picture of Klaine on the Lima Bean set this week, so we know dialogue is coming between the pair. Many a Klaine theorist purported that Kurt' father's prostate cancer would be the outside compelling factor to propel a reconciliation between the boys before the season's end, but we might be in for something more both subtle and overarching.  Blaine, faced with the reality of losing Kurt on a much grander scale, won't be willing to let his destiny pass him by, and Kurt likewise.  So a silent Blaine in the face of his possible loss speaks volumes about what might be to come in Klaine-land.
