Hulu Pulls "Golden Girls" Episode With Blackface Joke

"This is mud on our faces, we’re not really Black!"

Picture it: The Golden Girls... with a blackface joke?

The classic NBC sitcom with a massive gay following is the latest television series to have an episode removed from streaming due to a racist scene.

Hulu has pulled the Season 3 episode, "Mixed Feelings," which originally aired in 1988 and features Dorothy's son, Michael, planning to marry an older Black woman, Lorraine (Rosalind Cash). The Hollywood Reporter, which broke the news of the episode being removed, described the scene in question:

Dororthy (Bea Arthur) is concerned over the age difference while Lorraine’s family disapproves of their daughter marrying a white man, and thus the two families attempt to end the marriage. In the episode, Lorraine’s family finds Rose (Betty White) and Blanche (Rue McClanahan) trying a new mud facial treatment, and as they greet their family, Rose says, "This is mud on our faces, we’re not really Black."

30 Rock, Little Britain, Scrubs, and Community have also had episodes pulled from streaming services and syndication due to blackface jokes.

Hulu has not commented on the removal of the episode, so it is unclear whether it will return to the streaming platform. Until then, check out a clip from the episode below.
