“You have to have a lot of different things for a lot of different people,” content chief

Craig Erwich told Variety, adding that he looks for “stories that resonate with large audiences, regardless of age, gender, or background.”

Golden Girls, which ran on NBC from 1985 to 1992, has long been a favorite with the LGBT community, and continues to air on Logo.

“There’s a million reasons we love it—but I think there’s really two big ones,” says Jim Colucci, author of Golden Girls Forever. “There’s the campiness and humor, of course. We love the zingers."

But, on a deeper level, Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia were also a surrogate family. "Gay people aren’t always embraced by their biological family," says Colucci, "so we love the idea that you can forge this unbreakable bond with people you’re not related to.”

Though Golden Girls has been on the air in reruns since before it was canceled in 1992, the beloved sitcom has never been showcased in its entirety on a streaming platform.

“You need to have a pretty wide variety of shows—and then within that we try to have the best shows in each category,” Erwich said of Hulu's acquisition strategy. “You want to have the Empires and The Golden Girls and the South Parks because you can’t have everything.”

The company be debuting a live TV component later this year, allowing subscribers to pay extra to for live streams of several broadcast and cable channels, plus those channel’s on-demand offerings.

Hulu has also partnered with CMT on the new season of Nashville, streaming new episodes the day after they air. According to Variety, that's led to a 40% increase in viewership of all episodes since Season 5 debuted last week.
