Short Film "Golden" Sees A Young Man Becoming Comfortable In His Own Skin

Kai Staenike's poignant video is an apt metaphor for growing up gay.

Every Wednesday, we’ll be sharing short films that illuminate queer life. Welcome to #HumpdayShorts.

When you grow up feeling different from everyone around you, the moment you finally find your tribe can be a truly breathtaking experience.

Golden

That's the idea explored in the short film Golden, which follows the story of a boy who was born the color gold. In the video, which has no dialogue, we see him go through life distant and disconnected from those around him, a potent symbol for growing up gay. Then one day something happens, and the golden boy's life is never the same.

Filmmaker Kai Staenike shot Golden some time ago, but was inspired to share it last summer after the Pulse nightclub shooting.

“If it can spread just a tiny bit of love in these devastating times, the film fulfilled its purpose," Staenike told Queerty. “Wherever you are and no matter how tough times are right now: You are never alone. You have a place in life and together we are gonna make sure it’s a safe one."
