Gossip Girl's Gay Creator Regrets Not Having More Gay Characters On The Show

"Do you think I've never kissed a guy before?"

Gossip Girl premiered ten years ago today, and the show's out creator, Joshua Safran, says he regrets not injecting the show with more diversity.

“When I look back on Gossip Girl, the only things I regret were not as much representation for people of color and gay story lines,” Safran told Vulture. “Those are the two things I think we probably could have delved into more deeply."

Safran also alluded to some scenes he regrets cutting, including one of Chuck fingering Blair under a table and another involving Serena getting a big box of dildos from a rival.

“We had these really huge dildos in this house that Penn [Badgley] was so shocked to see," he revealed. "But we cut it because you couldn’t show them on air... [It was] hilarious because they’re like a foot-and-a-half long. Penn was really shocked.”

The teen drama did dabble in minor gay storylines in its six seasons—but barely.

Serena's little brother, Eric, messed around with Jenny's new boyfriend. But Connor Paolo, who played Eric, reportedly turned down the chance to become a series regular. (Whether it was because he wanted to keep his options open or was scared of being typecast as gay we'll never know.)

And there was the episode where Chuck (Ed Westwick) kissed Josh (Neal Bledsoe) in Season Three.

But it was mostly part of revenge scheme he was playing with Blair. After she intentionally "catches" them in the act, she asks Chuck "Are you upset because you kissed a guy?"

In typical Chuck style, he responds, "I’m upset because I kissed someone who wasn’t you. Do you think I’ve never kissed a guy before?" And that's the end of it.

Revelist's Becca Van Sambeck insists that the Chuck of the Gossip Girl books was more than likely bisexual: "It's a shame the show wasn't willing to include that aspect with their own take on the character. They essentially straightwashed him. I get not wanting to include the pet monkey he carried around like a confused Bond villain, but the bisexuality should've stayed."
