Gov. Cuomo: New York Will No Longer Recognize Marriages From Non-Gay Marriage States

As a number of states pass anti-LGBT legislation, corporations, celebrities and even other states are stepping up to signal their outrage.

But now New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has raised the bar by announcing New York will no longer recognize any marriage from a state that bans same-sex marriage.

"We joined Connecticut and other municipalities banning official travel to Indiana," Cuomo said at an emergency press conference Tuesday night. "But, in that spirit, I can no longer ignore the basic inequality faced by gay and lesbian New Yorkers when they visit states like Texas and Ohio."

A spokeswoman for the governor said the order will take place immediately.

Former President George W. Bush—who married former First Lady Laura Bush in Midland, Texas, in 1977—responded to the news at an event at his presidential library.

"Laura and I have been together for 37 years, and the governor of Maine can't take that away from us," said Bush. "New York—I meant New York."
