"Green Book" Writer Nick Vallelonga Sorry for Anti-Muslim Remarks

“Muslims in Jersey City cheering when towers went down.”

At the start of the week, Nick Vallelonga was on cloud nine after winning two Golden Globes for his work on Green Book. Now the filmmaker is in hot water after an anti-Muslim tweet from 2015 has resurfaced.

In the now-deleted tweet, Vallelonga replied to Donald Trump's claim about the September 11 attacks on Twitter, saying he saw "Muslims in Jersey City cheering when towers went down."

The writer and real-life son of Tony Lip, the movie's subject, has issued an apology for his remarks.

"I want to apologize," Vallelonga said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "I spent my life trying to bring this story of overcoming differences and finding common ground to the screen, and I am incredibly sorry to everyone associated with Green Book."

Vallelonga also apologized to Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), who portrays Dr. Don Shirley, the late jazz musician who was rumored to be gay.

"I especially deeply apologize to the brilliant and kind Mahershala Ali, and all members of the Muslim faith, for the hurt I have caused," said Vallelonga. "I am also sorry to my late father who changed so much from Dr. Shirley’s friendship and I promise this lesson is not lost on me."

Vallelonga isn't the only person from Green Book to apologize to Ali, who won Best Supporting Actor at the Globes.

During a discussion after a screening in November 2018, Viggo Mortensen, who portrays Tony Lip in the film, used the N-word. He apologized, insisting he had only been trying to show how times were different.
