"Grey's Anatomy" Actor Comes Out Alongside Character

"As a gay guy myself, tonight’s episode was so special to me."

History is being made at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital.

Earlier this year ABC announced that Alex Landi would be joining the cast of Grey's Anatomy to play Dr. Nico Kim, the series' first gay male surgeon.

On last night's episode, “Flowers Grow Out of My Grave,” surgical intern Levi Schmitt (Jake Borelli) came out to Nico as the two shared a steamy kiss in the hospital elevator.

After the West Coast airing of the episode Borelli took to Instagram and publicly came out as gay.

“As a gay guy myself, tonight’s episode was so special to me," he wrote in his Instagram caption. "This is exactly the kind of story I craved as a young gay kid growing up in Ohio, and it blows my mind that I'm able to bring life to Dr. Levi Schmitt as he begins to grapple with his own sexuality this season on Grey’s Anatomy."

Entertainment Weekly spoke to the actor about his decision to come out, and he revealed that he has been out to friends and family for close to a decade, but called parents to talk through his decision to publicly talk about his sexuality.

"My dad said, 'When you have a truth about yourself and you finally have the courage to speak up and share that truth, a weight gets lifted,'" Borelli told EW. "I knew in that moment this is the right thing to do. This is bigger than me."

"For people who are watching, I hope it can inspire them to tell their truth, whatever that may be. It doesn’t have to be about being gay. It’s just about being honest," he added.

Grey’s Anatomy has featured numerous LGBTQ characters, most notably bisexual orthopedic surgeon Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and lesbian pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw).

Last season Candis Cayne played a trans patient seeking vaginoplasty surgery, and trans actor Alex Blue Davis has appeared as trans intern Casey Parker.

We can't wait to see what drama—and more steamy kisses—are in store for Nico and Levi.
