Grindr Cracks Down On Meth Dealers On App

“Profiles with images of smoke, clouds and pills were easy to spot."

Grindr is the latest app trying to fight the meth epidemic within the gay community.

The gay news site, WEHOville conducted a two-month study on various gay dating apps and found that Grindr was the only one that allowed users to insert emojis into their profile headlines that suggest looking or selling drugs.

“It didn’t take us long to find a stack of Grindr uses offering marijuana, methamphetamines and a variety of pills,” reported the site. “Profiles with images of smoke, clouds and pills were easy to spot. … In their bio lines one user promoted that a delivery service was available if you placed an order, while another boasted their product was superior to other suppliers.”

Not only did WEHOville find three meth dealers out of the 101 local Grindr profiles, they also "negotiated sales with several of them, who quoted prices, offered payment options and offered to deliver"—proving how easy it is to procure drugs on the app.

Grindr has taken an effort to block words associated with drug use such as "meth" and "parTy" (the "T" stands for Tina, another name for meth) in users' profile headlines and blocked “T4$” (Tina for sale). However, the app still allows words like Tina or PNP ("party and play") used in their profiles.

Scruff, another gay hookup app recently blocked the word "party" in their users' profiles, but people have been able to get around it easily using alternatives like "ch3m" (chemsex) or "p4rty."

Grindr refused requests from WEHOville to comment.
