With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 beaming into theaters this Friday, the question remains: When are we going to see an out gay character in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie?
Vol 2. director James Gunn was coy in a recent interview, saying moviegoers may already have seen an LGBT character in a MCU movie, they just didn’t know it.
“You know, somebody asked me, ‘Will there be any gay characters in Marvel movies?’ and what I meant was there’s a lot of characters in the MCU and very few of them that we’ve delved into what their sexuality is,” he told the Guardian. “Whether it’s guy or straight or bisexual, we don’t really know. Um, so I imagine that there are probably, you know, gay characters in the Marvel universe, you know, we just don’t know who they are yet.”
Coming on the heels of the news that Black Panther is scrubbing a lesbian love story from the source comic book, that’s not very reassuring.
In a previous interview, Gunn had hinted there might an LGBT subplot in Vol 2. “We might have already done that. I say watch the movie. Check it out. See what you think.”
If there is representation, we hope it’s noticeable and respectful, not a toss-away joke or blink and you miss it reference.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens May 5.
