Guinness Drops Out Of NYC St. Patrick's Day Parade Over Gay Exclusion

Guinness announced Sunday that it is dropping its sponsorship of New York's annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade over organizers' ban on LGBT groups marching in the parade.

“Guinness has a strong history of supporting diversity and being an advocate for equality for all,” the company said in a statement. “We were hopeful that the policy of exclusion would be reversed for this year’s parade. As this has not come to pass, Guinness has withdrawn its participation. We will continue to work with community leaders to ensure that future parades have an inclusionary policy.”

Exactly how the withdrawal will affect the parade only a day beforehand  is unclear.

The news comes days after Heineken pulled out of the New York parade and Sam Adams canceled its sponsorship of Boston's celebration, which took place on Sunday. Both Big Apple mayor Bill De Blasio and Beantown mayor Martin Walsh declined to attend their respective parades over the issue of discrimination.

“Today, Guinness sent a strong message to its customers and employees: discrimination should never be celebrated,” said GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “As a gay mom who has fond memories of the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade, it saddens me that I can’t give those same memories to my own kids because my family isn’t welcome.”

According to GLAAD, Ford Motors is the only remaining major American corporate sponsor of the parade. A representative told CNBC “Ford Motor Company is involved in a wide range of events and organizations in communities across the country and around the world, including long-standing participation in this parade.”

New York's legendary Stonewall Inn, the symbolic birthplace of the gay-rights movement, threatened a Guinness boycott if the beermaker didn't break ties with the parade.
