Gus Kenworthy and Matthew Wilkas Call It Quits

The couple started dating in 2015.

Olympian Gus Kenworthy and actor Matthew Wilkas have announced they are separating after four years together.

“Gus and Matt are taking time apart,” a representative for the couple told People. “They love and support each other and remain close friends.”

The news comes just a little more than a month after the pair embarked on the AIDS Life Cycle together, biking from San Francisco to L.A. raising funds and awareness to help fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Kenworthy came out publicly as gay in 2015 after winning a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Games. While he didn’t reach the podium in PyeongChang, his televised smooch with Wilkas is believed to be the first same-sex kiss aired during the Olympics.

The two originally met on Instagram and were frequently featured on each other's accounts throughout their relationship.

“It definitely has its ups and downs,” Kenworthy previously told People. “With my job, I’m always on the road, so I think that makes it pretty tough… I think that’s hard for any relationship, and long-distance is tough."

Kenworthy has followed in the footsteps of Wilkas and can now add actor to his resume. It was announced in February that the Olympian had joined the cast of American Horror Story: 1984, which is set to premiere September 18 on FX.

No word yet on who will get the couple's rescue dog, Birdie.
