Out freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy officially earned his spot on the U.S. Olympic Team this weekend, making him the second out gay man on Team USA and the first in the testosterone-fueled world of action sports.

He was named to the team after winning the Slopestyle Finals in Colorado last week and taking second place in the Men’s Freeski Slopestyle Finals on Sunday. His 94.8 score on the first run at Mammoth Mountain was second only to Canadian Evan McEachran, who posted a 96.4.

Kenworthy also appeared on Top Chef this week and waved a rainbow flag in a new Head & Shoulders commercial.

Last month, he told reporters “nothing would make me happier,” than making the Olympics again, but that as excited as he'd be to represent America, he'd also be competing for the LGBT community.

”There are all these stereotypes and stigmas that people have associated in their mind over time but nothing breaks barriers down more than visibility or representation. Having someone at the Olympics, the pinnacle event in sports, competing against the best in the world and being out and proud and gay and getting a medal, it would be amazing.

“There is pressure that comes with this responsibility and I feel I have a responsibility to the LGBT community now. I want to lead by example and I want to be a positive example and an inspiration for any kids that I can.”

Kenworthy, who took home silver at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, came out a year later in an interview with ESPN. He joins American figure skater Adam Rippon and Canadian figure skater Eric Radford as the first out men to compete in a Winter Games, when the 2018 Winter Olympics begin PyeongChang on February 9.
