Hall-Of-Famer Michael Irwin, Other Football Stars, Rooting For Michael Sam In NFL Draft Pick

We're  rooting for out football player Michael Sam to get picked in the 2014 NFL draft, which kicked off today—and so are some big names in football, too.

Hall of Famer Michael Irvin, who helped the Dallas Cowboys win three Super Bowls in the 1990s, posted a photo of himself and Sam, writing  "The guy I am pulling for the most in this #draft is @mikesamfootball all the best buddy. Thanks for being you!"

"When I step into the huddle I don't look to see if the guy is black or white, Jewish or Christian," Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson told HuffPo. I just look to see that he's on the same page for that one goal."

"At the end of the day guys wanna win championships. Guys wanna win football games," says wide receiver Donté Stollworth. "If that kid can help you win games and he comes in prepared and works hard… he'll be fine."

Sam was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year and is set to receive the 2014 Arthur Ashe Courage Award, but insiders say there's a real chance he won't be selected at this year's draft, which runs through Saturday. Whether that's because of his unimpressive showing at the NFL Combine, or because of the perceived risk of signing a gay player we can't say.

Right-wing lobbyist Jack Burkman announced he's got a coalition of Evangelical leaders ready to boycott any NFL team that signs Michael Sam.

“When you trample the Christian community and Christian values, there will be a terrible financial price to pay,” says Burkman.

“We shall exercise our First Amendment rights and shall not stop until the drafting NFL franchise cannot sell a single ticket, jersey or autographed football. We shall be relentless.”
