On a day like today, 38 years ago, the world became a more beautiful place when David Beckham was born in Leytonstone (London, England). Since then, he’s pretty much conquered the world of soccer football, become a cultural icon, a fashion icon, a gay icon (and he embraces it openly), and the icon of many a naughty fantasy for boys and girls alike. As we celebrate his birthday and wish him many many more, let us count the ways we love him: (just a few, because otherwise we’d be here all day!)
1. He’s a great dad.
David (married to Victoria “Posh” Beckham) is father to their four children, Brooklyn, Cruz, Romeo, and Harper, and I’m not ashamed to say that watching him with his kids melts my cold cold heart. (It might also set my biological clock on fire but that’s a story for another time.) Victoria’s gone on record many times about what a great father he is, and how hands-on he is, but we don’t need her to tell us… we can see it all over him (literally, in his tattoos).
2. No one can “Bend It Like Beckham”
There’s no denying the guy’s got talent. So much so that he inspired the hit British movie, “Bend It Like Beckham,” (itself full of gay cred). He’s played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, and currently, Paris Saint-Germain. He’s helped his teams win countless times (World Cup, MLS Cup), and almost more importantly – he has looked good doing it!
3. The man knows how to dress!
His sense of style has always drawn people to him and it’s easy to see why. Whether he’s dressing up in a suit or dressing down in casual wear, his choices are almost always impeccable. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the guy is a walking mannequin and anything you put on him looks great. (He’s no stranger to the fashion runway either, having walked it himself a time or two)
4. The tattoos
I’ll admit, I’m not always the biggest fan of tattoos but there’s something about the way he carries them that makes them work. And tattoos can be sexy… very sexy – and on him, they are! It might have to do with the fact that most of them are inspired by and dedicated to his family, his children. Or it might just be that I’m shallow and all I see is a pretty guy covered in pretty ink.
5. The man knows how to undress!
Being the star of many an ad campaign (some for cell phones, eyewear, watches, shavers, etc… but we’re not talking about those) has given us almost unrestricted access to Beckham’s beautiful anatomy (thank you football!). When it comes to selling, no one can sell a package underwear better than “Becks,” just ask H&M and Armani Exchange.
From all of us here at The Backlot, Happy Birthday, Becks!
