Happy Birthday, Lea Michele! Here Are Five Broadway Parts Perfect For You

LM02

Lea Michele, Glee’s breakout diva, 27 today—Happy birthday, girl! Though Rachel Berry has provided her with huge recognition, Lea began her career on the Broadway stage and, damn it, we need to see her back on it.. As Lea blows out the candles on her cake, we've come up with five roles we’d like Michele to keep firmly in mind. Because we know she’d just nail them.

Five Broadway Parts That Would Be Perfect For Lea Michele

LM Elphaba

Elphaba in Wicked

Why she’s good for it: This one’s a given. Ever since rumors of a film version of the stage smash began spreading, Lea has been a fan favorite for the lead. She’s got the pipes for those high notes, and a vocal style that matches Idina Menzel’s original iconic portrayal.

Why it’s good for her: It’s a big, complex role that’ll give her a chance to stretch her legs, acting-wise, hopefully earning some positive notice from critics.

Why it’s good for us: We get a recording of her singing “Defying Gravity” that hasn’t been awkwardly butchered into a duet with Chris Colfer.

 LM Barbra

Barbra Streisand in Untitled Barbra Streisand Biopic

Why she’s good for it: Lea’s done some not-so-subtle campaigning for a Funny Girl reboot, but we think that’s setting the bar too low. Eventually, someone’s going to make a musical about Babs herself, and Lea needs to keep her eyes on the prize. She’s a tiny Jewish girl with a giant voice and a rabid fan base that loves her despite rumors of an equally outsized ego. Translation: She was born for this role.

Why it’s good for her: Guaranteed Tony nomination—if only to get Babs back at the Tonys

Why it’s good for us: At best, it’ll be a masterpiece, becoming an instant classic and one of your favorite musical. At worst, it’ll be a train wreck, turning into a camp classic and one of your favorite musicals.

LM Audrey

Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors

Why she’s good for it: Musicals are getting made and remade left and right. It’s only a matter of time before Shop returns with improved special effects, a new Alan Menken song, and a ditzier female lead in an even bigger blonde wig. Even in Rachel's most self-absorbed moments, Lea embodies the character with copious helpings of doe-eyed sincerity. Which will come in handy when playing the bimbo with a heart of gold.

Why it’s good for her: She’s not the obvious choice, so casting directors (and Tony nominators) will definitely take note.

Why it’s good for us: No T no shade, but Kerri Butler’s performance in the Broadway revival was underwhelming. We’d love to see someone do Ellen Greene justice.

LM Yitzhak

Yitzhak in Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Why she’s good for it: Neil Patrick Harris has already been named the headliner in John Cameron Mitchell’s revival of this off-Broadway smash. He’s going to need a supporting cast, though. The production team is obviously going for big names to get butts in seats, and she brings a broader appeal from a younger demographic.

Why it’s good for her: The excitement when this show was announced bordered on unnerving. She would do well for herself to ride that wave.

Why it’s good for us: She might make a seriously hot dude.

LM Gretchen Wieners

Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls: The Musical

Why she’s good for it: If this is going to happen (and it sounds like it really might), then there’s only one option for the role originated by Lacy Chabert. Do the right thing, Tina Fey and Co.: Lea has years of experience playing the annoying princess you can’t help but love.

Why it’s good for her: She’s probably looking to avoid high school and start an adult acting career, but no one in their right mind would pass up a chance to sit with the Plastics.

Why it’s good for us: Imagine how fun it will be singing along  to all those catch phrases. What rhymes with "fetch"?
