People Who Read Harry Potter Books Are More Gay Friendly, Study Claims

A recent study found that reading Harry Potter books improves the attitudes of young people toward stigmatized groups like LGBT people and refugees.

Published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology, "The Greatest Magic of Harry Potter: Reducing Prejudice" noted a direct correlation between the number of Potter books read and a reduction in prejudice among elementary, high school and university students.

A small number of readers identified with Harry's nemesis, Voldemort.

Though she once claimed she "never set out to teach anyone anything" with the Potter books, author J.K. Rowling called them "a prolonged argument for tolerance, a prolonged plea for an end to bigotry."

She also famously outed Dumbledore in 2007: "It is a very interesting question because I think homophobia is a fear of people loving, more than it is of the sexual act," Rowling said of Dumbledore's sexuality. "People have to examine their own attitudes."
