Man Faces 15 Years in Prison for Homophobic Attack Outside Gay Bar

Brandon McNamara was arraigned on charges of assault, menacing, and harassment as hate crimes.

A man faces up to 15 years behind bars for brutally assaulting a gay couple outside a popular Brooklyn gay bar.

Brandon McNamara, 25, who was arrested in September in connection with an anti-gay attack on two New Jersey men near Metropolitan in Williamsburg, was arraigned this week on charges of assault, menacing, and harassment as hate crimes, Brooklyn Paper reports.

“This defendant allegedly assaulted an innocent couple simply because he perceived they were gay,” says District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. “Crimes that target individuals because of their sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or other identity are a threat to everything we stand for in Brooklyn.”

Witnesses allege McNamara yelled homophobic slurs at his unnamed victims, ages 29 and 34.

McNamara reportedly chased the couple down Metropolitan Avenue, punching one victim in the face and throwing the other against a tree, leaving both men unconscious. The victims were later treated at the hospital for a fractured shoulder and broken finger.

McNamara, who turned himself in to police after authorities circulated a photo of him taken by a bystander, was released from Brooklyn Criminal Court on a $15,000 bail. He is expected to return to court January 16 and could receive a prison sentence of up to 15 years if convicted.
