HBO To Produce 1960s-Era Gay Rights Drama "Open City"

On the heels of the critical—if not necessarily commercial—success of The Normal Heart, HBO has set its sights on a queer drama centering on the 1960s cultural revolution, Open City.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Open City is set in the vibrant, turbulent John Lindsay-era New York of the late 1960s and explores characters from disparate corners of Manhattan as they navigate the cultural revolution and political turmoil of the era. The drama will also examine the unlikely alliance between the Mafia and the city's gay community in the opening of a West Village nightclub.

The project will be helmed by Hairspray director Adam Shankman with a script by David Kajganich, perhaps best known for penning the 2007 sci-fi remake, Invasion. Ronnie Lorenzo, one of the original owners of the iconic Stonewall Inn  will serve as a consulting producer.

Meanwhile, The Normal Heart is already generating its fair share of awards buzz and even talks of a sequel. Perhaps The Normal Heart 2: Gays Strike Back?
