Gay '80s Drama "Pride" Wins Top Honors At British Independent Film Awards

Pride, the true story of queer British activists who reached out to support striking coal miners in Thatcherite England, took home top honors at the British Independent Film Awards yesterday— including Best Film, Best Supporting Actress for Imelda Staunton and Best Supporting Actor for out Sherlock star Andrew Scott.

Though it recounts a defining moment in UK history, the film has garnered worldwide acclaim for its humor, and depth and rich performances from Staunton, Scott and Bill Nighy.

"We're getting reports from up and down the country of audiences standing up and applauding. That doesn't really happen in British cinemas," said director Matthew Warchus. "It's just extraordinary. It's a real tribute to the source material.
