The "Heathers" Are Back To Rule The School In New Trailer For TV Reboot

"Lick it up, baby. Lick it up."

"Dear Diary, my teen-angst bullsh*t now has a body count."

Paramount Network has released a new red band trailer for the Heathers TV adaptation—and the preview proves that just because the 1989 cult classic has made the transfer to the small screen, doesn't mean it has dialed back the violence or classic quotes.

The Hollywood Reporter describes the new version as a modern-day black comedy with a new set of Heathers: “Heather McNamara (Jasmine Mathews) is a black lesbian, Heather Duke (Brendan Scannell) is a male who identifies as gender-queer whose real name is Heath; and Heather Chandler (Melanie Field) has a body like Martha Dumptruck.”

“The reason I changed the Heathers surface identities is I think today [the characterization] rings true. Today, all different types of people are more aspirational," showrunner Jason Micallef told Entertainment Weekly.

"People that wouldn’t have necessarily been considered the most popular kids in school in 1988 could very well be — and probably most likely are — the more popular kids today."

In the new trailer you spend more time with your new Heathers, but you also get to meet Veronica Sawyer (Grace Victoria Cox) and J.D. (James Scully), who plan to kill off the Heathers. The preview also shows viewers the first glimpses of cameos by Shannen Doherty and Selma Blair.

“The main thing to really take away is I don’t view the Heathers as the villains,” Micallef explained. “The three Heathers are incredibly powerful and ruling the school; they’re the people you would want to be"

The series is being described as a "pitch-black" comedic anthology, and the word is that every season will feature a new group of Heathers.
