Help Support The Gay Man Burned By Boiling Water In A Vicious Hate Crime

Marquez Tolbert suffered second and third degree burns, and endured 10 days of surgery.

A GoFundMe campaign set up to help pay the medical bills for one of the men severely burned in an anti-gay attack in his boyfriend’s home last month has raised over $30,000.

The campaign was set up by a friend of the mother of Marquez Tolbert, who suffered second and third degree burns on his neck, back, and face after his boyfriend’s mother’s boyfriend poured scalding water on the couple as they slept in the same bed, simply because he disapproved of their relationship.

“I can barely think straight because the burning, the stinging is everywhere,” said Marquez.

The assailant reportedly told police “They’ll be all right, it was just a little hot water on them” before he was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated battery.

But Marquez is frankly not alright, and now he’s also in debt after 10 days of surgery to transfer skin from his thigh to his back.

Wrote the friend:

“I have watched Marquez’s mother suffer right along with him. When he came out to her, she told me that her son being harmed was her greatest fear. It’s a shame that our society places that kind on fear in a parent’s heart. It gives you a feeling of helplessness, and when it actually occurs, you lose hope. Marquez is home now, but has a long road to recovery. Through it all, he has remained strong and not disheartened by what has happened to him. I am so impressed by his character. He has been focused on healing, and in a way, has been holding up his mother.”

The friend said all proceeds will go toward helping the family pay for Marquez’s treatment, prescriptions, recovery supplies, and everyday expenses like rent and utilities.
