Henry Golding Is a Hunk on a Soul Search in First “Monsoon” Trailer

The "Crazy Rich Asians" star plays gay in director Hong Khaou's forthcoming drama.

With international travel effectively suspended amid the coronavirus pandemic, let this first look at Hong Khaou’s new gay drama transport you to Vietnam.

The trailer for Monsoon—the latest from the acclaimed Cambodian director of the 2014 queer film Lilting—sees Henry Golding star as Kit, a Vietnam-born Brit who returns to his motherland after 30 years away to find himself, and finds love along the way.

Monsoon marks the first major LGBTQ role for Golding, a Malaysian actor and British television host who became a household name after starring in the 2018 blockbuster rom-com Crazy Rich Asians.

Golding as Kit (R) alongside Parker Sawyers as Lewis, his love interest.

His love interest, Lewis, is played by Parker Sawyers, an American actor best known for starring as a young Barack Obama in the 2016 biopic Southside With You.

Monsoon is a rich and poignant reflection on the struggle for identity in a place where the past weighs heavily on the present,” the film’s synopsis reads in part. “Kit (Henry Golding, Crazy Rich Asians) returns to Ho Chi Minh City for the first time since he was 6 years old when his family fled the country in the aftermath of the Vietnam-American war.”

Sadly, there’s no theatrical release date confirmed for Monsoon in the U.K. or the U.S. due to the pandemic.
