High School Senior Sneaks Gay Statement In Yearbook With “Grey’s Anatomy” Quote

“I am so, so, so gay.”

A New Mexico high school student has Shondaland to thank for her instantly iconic yearbook quote.

Krysta Montoya, an 18-year-old senior at Valley High School in Albuquerque, chose to express herself in the yearbook with help from one of her favorite TV shows. The quote simply reads, “Grey’s Anatomy Season 5, Episode 6, 39:40.”

Montoya later decoded the cryptic message on Twitter, explaining that it refers to the moment Grey's Anatomy character Erica Hahn, shortly after having sex with Callie Torres, declares, “I am so, so, so gay.”

“I just loved it,” Montoya tells HuffPost. “I was watching Grey’s and I saw it and I took a screenshot, so I kept it in my camera roll ever since.”

Because the school administration wouldn't let her use “I am so, so, so gay" as her senior quote, she had to make her point more covertly.

Montoya says that although she’s been out since her freshmen year, her lack of romantic experience made her peers think she was just going through a phase.

“I felt insecure—even at times I doubted if I was a lesbian,” she says.

“Some people even said I’d be with a boy by senior year. So what better way to prove them wrong by making my senior quote, ‘I’m so, so, so gay?’”
