Why Doesn't "Highlights" Magazine Include LGBT Families?

Two moms are on a mission to see their family represented in the children's series.

The popular kids magazine Highlights does a pretty good job of showing diverse people and families on its pages, but same-sex parents are currently not included among the variety.

Kristina Wertz and Kara Desiderio have a 1-year-old daughter who loves Hello, the Highlights magazine for kids under two, and decided to write a letter to the company to ask why no LGBT families are currently represented.

After not receiving a response, the mothers decided to post on the Highlights Facebook page.

This time, they received a fast reply that explained that the editors will "continue to think deeply about inclusion."

“That’s when I was more offended, honestly," Wentz told Buzzfeed about the magazine's response. "They called my family a ‘situation’ and they let us know they were proactively excluding same-sex families."

Other parents, including heterosexual couples, started noticing the interaction and expressed their concerns over the lack of LGBT representation.

“Even though my kids are being raised in a ‘traditional’ family, we seek out media, schools and experiences that expose them to the wonderful diversity of our world," one parent commented. "It’s sad to know that a magazine I remember so fondly from my own childhood doesn’t support the same diversity."

The rising backlash got the editors of the magazine to put out another statement agreeing that "families are families no matter what they look like."

They stated that LGBT inclusion was not a matter of "if" but "when," but many parents would like to know what that timeline actually looks like.

"The ‘when’ should have been yesterday or, even better, many years ago," another mom commented. "A greater sense of urgency would be welcome by many. Nothing age inappropriate or complicated about my family."

Highlights' responses, including this final note posted on their website, improved with each edition, but only time will tell how long kids of same-sex parents have to wait to feel like their families are not something to be ashamed of.
