Food Truck Tests North Carolina's HB2 By Legally Refusing To Serve Gay People

"The Daily Show" planted the homophobic truck to reveal what legal discrimination looks like.

Many employers have boycotted North Carolina due to its anti-LGBT HB2, which allows private businesses to discriminate against gay people, but what happens to those who stay and take advantage of the discriminatory law?

The Daily Show decided to examine what the law looks like in practice by setting up a homophobic fast food truck in Raleigh that refuses to serve anyone its employees believe to be gay.

“I wanted to show North Carolinians what HB2 would look like in action, so I rented a food truck, made up a fake barbecue company and set out to refuse service to people by telling them they’re gay," said correspondent Roy Wood Jr.

"Let’s be clear," he added. "I don’t care if they’re gay or not, but HB2 says I can do this Jim Crow-level sh*t and nobody can stop me."

The customers are turned away for their perceived sexual orientation one by one, with a pastor eventually sticking up for his friend and declaring, "Even if he were gay...you should still serve him."

A recent poll showed the pastor is not alone in his viewpoint, as 70% of North Carolinians feel HB2 is bad for their state.

"But until their government repeals HB2, this ridiculous thing we did is completely, 100% legal," says Wood.

The segment is funny, but the reality of the situation is a frightening reminder that this kind of unacceptable discrimination has been made legal in 2016.
