Homophobic Nurse Tries To Stop Mother From Letting Gay Couple Adopt Her Baby

Andy Miller of Houston, TX sat down with the folks of I Am Driftwood to recount the story of when he and his partner first picked up their new son from the hospital–and the homophobic nurse that almost ruined it all.

We talked to [the birth mother] on Tuesday. On Wednesday we made a plan to drive down to San Antonio to meet her for dinner, meet her and her family. It went very well.

By the time we got back to Austin, we were told that she had picked us, and then on Thursday we were invited to come back down, because she was having a sonogram to figure out the sex of the child.

A week later, their son was born.

While Miller and his partner were visiting the hospital to meet this new baby, one of her nurses began to interrogate the birth mother.

Miller said the nurse asked the mother if she was "giving up" the baby (which he notes that any adoption specialist would say is a statement loaded with judgment), then proceeded to ask if she the baby was going to "those two boys."

After being asked by the nurse if she was concerned that the baby would be "hurt" or not grow up "normal" in a gay family, the birth mother "shut down" as Miller puts it, and began second guessing the adoption.

"We were very scared that we were going to fail to place (aka become the parents of the child)," Miller said.

Fortunately, a social worker engaged in a mediation between the two parties, and by the end of her time there, Miller and his partner officially became the fathers of this newborn baby boy.

Miller added that the struggle LGBT people experience when trying to become parents is a universal one. "We're all more alike than we are different," he said.
