Homophobic Subway Graffiti Trolls Lesbian Soccer Stars of USWNT

Because winning the World Cup isn't enough to keep the bigots at bay.

Homophobic subway trolls directed some anti-gay graffiti at the nation's most buzz-worthy lesbians: the world champion athletes of the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team.

As Gay City News reports, the vandals in question graffitied anti-gay slurs over posters of the queer-led soccer team at the 42nd Street-Bryant Park/Fifth Avenue subway station in midtown Manhattan on Monday, July 8. MTA police were notified of the defaced posters that same day and soon fixed them.

The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force is investigating the case, according to The Hollywood Reporter; however, they currently have no leads.

In a statement to Gay City News, a rep from the MTA confirmed that "Hate has no place in the transit system, and we work hard to make the subway a welcoming, safe environment for everyone."

It's not like the world-class soccer stars of the USWNT were bothered, either. After their World Cup win that Sunday, the team—led in part by out athletes Megan Rapinoe, Ali Krieger, and Ashlyn Harris, among others—took to the streets of New York City on Tuesday, July 9, for an epic victory march.

After all, Rapinoe, the team's outspoken, super-political co-captain, said it best: Gays rule. It's just science. Case closed.
