Hot for teacher: An interview with Nina Flowers from RuPaul's Drag U

Ask any uberfan of RuPaul's Drag Race season one about who their favorite queen was, and chances are you'll be greeted with a big, enthusiastic "Nina Flowers!!!!" The edgy Puerto Rican fashionista (and top three finalist) charmed the bejesus out of everyone who watched, and there are plenty who feel like the loca-licous diva should have taken home the big grand prize.

Next Monday, La Flowers makes her big splashy TV return, as she's included in the fab faculty of prancey professors on RuPaul's Drag U (premiering on Logo on July 19th at 9pm ET). The series brings back a bunch of your favorite Drag Race alumni who, this time around, are called upon by Drag U's headmaster RuPaul to school real women (yes, biological females) in the art of drag magic. Each week, three queens will help three women reclaim their innate confidence and glamour in a competition that's simultaneously heartwarming, empowering and just fun and sassy.

To get you prepped, we've got interviews with all of the queens of the cast and the first up is Miss Nina. Read on, find out about what to expect from the show and catch up this lovely loca chica. Read it all after the jump!

What was the biggest drag drama that you faced while you were a professor on RuPauls Drag U?

The biggest drama I faced on the show was helping one lady to elevate her self-esteem. Her lack of confidence was so intense that it felt like she was ready to give up. Because of this, she made it really hard for me to work with her.

How do you think the power of drag can help biological women?

I believe it can help by making them explore things they have never tried before. If you never experience new things in life, how do you expect to keep growing as a person? In my experience, drag takes you there. It helps you break fears [sic] and elevate yourself to a higher power!!!

Academic question: Drag is considered an exaggerated form of gender presentation; how do you help these biological women use the art of drag to feel comfortable with them in a non-exaggerated way?

I think conversation helps. I encourage them and tell them to take the art and use it to loosen themselves and find the deep drag queen inside them!!! In the end we must always have fun!!!

How has helping these women made you feel?

Empowering!!! It was an amazing satisfaction to see how my work can help to inspire others. That feeling is what makes me keep going.

With out giving anything away about the episodes, which transformations were the most challenging and why were they so tough?

I think all of them. These ladies came all from different backgrounds but the one thing they had in common was they needed a big push to discover we all have potential in life to achieve whatever we want.

Describe your proudest moment as a professor on Drag U.

To see the ladies on graduation day! The total transformation in all the ladies was priceless!

What do you think your students have gained from their experience at Drag U?

Life is too short. We should never give up hope under any circumstance. If we give up, we are sinking ourselves without the possibility of finding out if it was worth trying it.

What have you gained from your experience as a professor?

To learn from others.

From left: On the Drag U set with (from left) Raven, Nina Flowers, Morgan McMichaels and Headmaster RuPaul!

How did your experience as a contestant on Drag Race prepare you for your role on Drag U?

RuPaul's Drag Race has been the highlight of my career. It pushed me to be the best entertainer I can possibly be. It made me discover I was capable of doing things I never thought I could do! I think been able to learn from this experience prepared me for my role on Drag U.

Aside from yourself, who was the best Drag U professor? Why? And who was the worst?

In my opinion we were all great. We are all different entertainers with different styles of drag. If we made it to the show is because we was capable to be there.

Knowing what you do now, if you could tell yourself anything when you were first starting to get involved with drag performance, what would you say?

Stay true to yourself and don't ever be afraid of expressing the art they way you feel like it!!! If we would all be dressing the same way, dancing the same choreography and beating our faces with the same colors, this would be a very boring drag world!!!
