How Bret Easton Ellis Saved Todd Michael Schultz & Helped The Pop-Star Finish His New EP

When Todd Schultz met Bret Easton Ellis, the aspiring musician and son of legendary animation producer Bill Schultz, was a at party at The Magic Castle in Hollywood, where his ex boyfriend, a film director, was holding a dinner party to try and find Ellis a new boyfriend. Ellis wasn't impressed with the choices, but he was instantly infatuated with Schultz, and the feeling was mutual. Schultz was working as the Online Community Manager at the NFL website for kids, but he really wanted to be a pop star, had ever since he was an undergrad at the University of Iowa. A few months later, the intellectual, multilingual Schultz had quit his job and was living with the famous writer, who's career was on a rebound. This dovetailed with a period when Schultz wasn't sure he'd ever work again.

"I'm so poor," Schultz tells me. "And I was afraid that all I was going to be know for is being the Robert Pattison Party Tweeter." Schultz is referring to the little bit of notoriety he's got from Perez Hilton, who prominently featured his tweets from a party at Pattinson's. Like most millienials, Schultz feels like he's fallen through the cracks. Graduating at the height of the recession, as the recovery takes place, the industry wants newbies, new grads, not has-beens at 25 with no experience or someone like Schultz, whose resume reads like a scion of Hollywood royalty who's spent the last two years trying to break in the music biz by riding the coattails of his infamous boyfriend. But I'm here to tell you that Schultz is a legitmate, bonafide pop star--just one whose hills and valleys took place in The Canyons, made famous by every generation of Hollywood, but in this iteration it is the Bret Easton Ellis version starring Lindsay Lohan.

He was "freaked out" when he read the script. "That was me!" he says, referring to the character Tara, that Lohan plays in the film. "That scene where James Deen's character is filming Lohan making out with another guy. When Bret asked Todd about he felt though,he just said "No one has a private life anymore, Bret."

During that time, "I was going from thing to thing never sticking with anything, and that's when the idea for the told my story video came from, it was to try and convince the public to allow me to rise out of the canyons! I have spent nearly 10 thousand dollars of money I'm supposed to pay back to Bret." The two have a contract that Schultz will pay Bret back and he will get 20 percent of profits. But even so, "I've still spent more than I'm probably supposed to. I'm not sure if I'm lazy, or I'm mentally ill... but getting a job seems impossible to me. I feel like I mingle with a lot of celebrities, and have remained anonymous against my will."

Schultz is far from lazy and had some downturns that Ellis helped him through. "Bret's a genius. I love him." But, "I got serious about my music because of Bret's support and because after doing so many things to try and get attention in Hollywood... the thing that got me the most attention was tweeting about a party at Rob Pattinson's house. And I realized that as soon as people were through with the information I had, most of them didn't care about me... Although I did manage to gain a few fans through the party tweets."
