How Has Five Years Of "It Gets Better" Affected The LGBT Community?

And what comes next?

It's hard to believe it was just five years ago that Dan Savage and Terry Miller had the idea to encourage LGBT youth with a video explaining that, while things may seem bleak now, "it gets better."

Since then, more than 50,000 It Gets Better videos have been recorded by everyone from Ellen DeGeneres and President Barack Obama to regular folks all over the globe—and have reached a total of more than 50 million views. Many who post videos reveal it was seeing another It Gets Better video that helped them get through the dark times.

Today, the It Gets Better Project announced the "5 Years Better" initiative, which encourages people to recount moments that have made a difference for them, and share how they plan to commit make the next five even better.

"Over the last five years, we've had the honor to communicate with today's LGBT youth and let them know there is a global community for them,” said Brett Peters, communications director for It Gets Better.

If you already submitted an It Gets Better testimonial, consider following it up with a 5 Years Better video. If you haven't, now's a great time to make one!
