How You Can Help People In Puerto Rico Devastated By Hurricane Maria
Our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico have been devastated by Hurricane Maria just two weeks after Hurricane Irma did more than $1 billion in damage to the island.
Here several different ways you can help:
1. Global Giving
This international nonprofit channels funds for local projects and raised more than $3.5 million for Hurricane Harvey relief. Now it's aiming to meet a $2 million-dollar goal for Puerto Rico. Donate here.
2. UNICEF
90% of donations to The United Nations Children’s Fund's hurricane relief fund go directly to help children receive food, shelter and other resources. Donate here.
3. Unidos por Puerto Rico
Beatriz Rosselló, the First Lady of Puerto Rico, teamed up with the private sector on this initiative to support victims of both Irma and Maria. Donate here.
4. LGBT Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico’s LGBT center is providing updates on how to best assist queer people in need. The group is active on Facebook and Twitter.
5. Ricky Martin's YouCaring Campaign
Angry at the tepid response to the apocalyptic conditions, the out pop star has launched a crowdfunding campaign for desperately needed services and repairs in his homeland. Martin donated $100,000 of his own money, and others have kicked in almost $300,000 more. Donate here.
6. Centro Comunitario LGBTT de Puerto Rico
When disaster strikes, LGBT people may not feel safe or welcome accessing resources. CenterLink, an association of LGBT centers, has established a fundraising page for Centro Comunitario LGBTT de Puerto Rico, to aid relief efforts to the community—food, batteries, flashlights, and a generator.
You can also mail small packages with needed items (batteries, flashlights, non-perishable food items like powdered milk) to:
