Hozier Backs Marriage Equality In Ireland, Says Support from Allies Is "Imperative"

Sasquatch! Music Festival 2014 In Washington - Portraits Day 1

Irish singer/songwriter Hozier throws "full support" behind marriage equality in a new video, urging the public to vote 'Yes' in Ireland's upcoming marriage equality referendum.

"I firmly believe that the upcoming referendum is not simply a gay rights issue or a civil rights issue, but one of basic human rights," the Grammy-nominated singer says in the clip, filmed for the Straight Up For Equality campaign. "I think it's one that reflects on all of us and it's an issue that deserves everyone's involvement."

The video for Hozier's 2013 gospel-inspired track "Take Me To Church" made reference to the persecution of gays in Russia. In the video below, he says it's "imperative for the straight community to show support…and make a clear statement."

He concludes: "It's time for our generation to stand up and take into our own hands the future of our nation and its values…To anyone who is tired of the sophistry, the fear-mongering or the outright deception of those who, under the guise of traditional family values, promote an irrational aversion to same-sex marriage or relationships – I encourage you to vote."
