180+ LGBTQ Groups Formally Oppose Amy Coney Barrett’s Nomination

The ultra-conservative judge is poised to be confirmed to the Supreme Court later today.

More than 180 LGBTQ advocacy groups have signed on to a letter formally opposing Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court ahead of her expected confirmation.

The letter—authored by HRC and co-signed by 185 LGBTQ organizations, including GLAAD, Lambda Legal, and the Transgender Law Center—details the harm an ultra-conservative justice like Barrett could cause to LGBTQ Americans and asks senators to vote “no” on her nomination.

As NewNowNext previously reported, Barrett, a law professor-turned-U.S. Court of Appeals judge, was nominated by President Donald Trump to replace the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Barrett is personally pro-life and anti-marriage equality, and she’s spoken at events for the Alliance Defending Freedom, an organization designated as an anti-LGBTQ hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

“As Judge Barrett has acknowledged, she embraces a conservative judicial philosophy that aligns her with former Justice Scalia, one of the most conservative justices ever to sit on our nation’s high court, and one who consistently voted against LGBTQ people in every LGBTQ rights case decided by the Court during his tenure,” HRC’s letter reads in part. “Her presence on the Court would change the current balance of the Court dramatically, in ways that are highly likely to cause lasting harm to LGBTQ people and other vulnerable groups. We urge you to oppose Judge Barrett and vote no on her confirmation.”

Barrett is poised to be confirmed to the Court this Monday, according to NBC News. The final vote is scheduled for 7:30pm ET on October 26, 30 days since Trump ignored Justice Ginsburg’s dying wish and announced his own nominee to fill her spot.
