Gay Couple Sneak A Kiss While Building Human Tower

Human towers, or castells, date back to 18th century Spain.

Human towers are a big thing in Spain, where they're called castells. The tradition dates back to 18th century Catalonia, and the biggest one featured 10 levels of people with four people in each level.

At a recent castell competition outside Barcelona's City Hall, a gay couple took a moment to smooch while constructing a tower.

Interestingly, constructors don't just add people onto the top of the tower, rather each successive layer is added from the bottom by lifting the castell into the air. It's celebrated as a feat of "strength, balance, courage and common sense."

Per Wikipedia:

A castell is considered a success when stages of its assembling and disassembling, can be done in complete succession.

The assembly is complete once all castellers have climbed into their designated places, and the enxaneta climbs into place at the top and raises one hand with four fingers erect, in a gesture said to symbolize the stripes of the Catalan flag.

The enxaneta then climbs down the other side of the castell, after which the remaining levels of castellers descend in highest-to-lowest order until all have reached safety.

UNESCO has declared castells a valued example of intangible cultural heritage.
