Hunger Games actor and feminist activist Amandla Stenberg, 19, has come out as gay in a new Wonderland cover story.

"So happy to say the words Yep, I’m Gay in official print," Stenberg writes on Instagram, sharing photos and an excerpt from the magazine interview. It was conducted by Stenberg's close friend, queer recording artist King Princess.

"Thank you to KP for providing me with such a safe space to come out," Stenberg continues. "We talk about gay sobbing, first encounters with lesbian masturbation, queer icons, Toni Morrison, disillusionment as a critical step, the art I’ve been working on, and the films that I have coming out this year."

“I’m grateful for how being gay has afforded me this ability to experience and understand love and sex, and therefore life, in an expansive and infinite way," Stenberg says in the Wonderland summer issue, now on newsstands and available Monday online.

"The continual process of unlearning heteronormativity and internalized homophobia can be difficult, but one of the biggest blessings lies in the magic that comes from having to understand love outside the confines of learned heterosexual roles.”

“My sexuality is not a byproduct of my past experiences with men, who I have loved, but rather a part of myself I was born with and love deeply.”

Stenberg previously came out as bisexual in 2016 via Snapchat, explaining, “It’s a really, really hard thing to be silenced and it’s deeply bruising to fight against your identity and to mold yourself into shapes that you just shouldn’t be in.”

"I would also use the word pansexual to describe my sexuality," Stenberg clarified. "The thing is I use the word bisexual just because I feel like for people who don't necessarily know that vocabulary... it's easier to say I’m bi."

The actor later identified as non-binary and expressed a preference for genderneutral they/them pronouns: "I tend to believe that gender as we've set it up in current-day society doesn't actually exist."

Stenberg is best known for playing Rue in the 2012 blockbuster The Hunger Games. Last year they starred opposite Love, Simon's Nick Robinson in the romantic drama Everything, Everything, and upcoming films include The Darkest Minds and The Hate U Give.
