Ian Matos, Champion Diver, Comes Out As Gay

Ian Matos, a champion diver from Brazil, came out publicly as gay in an interview with Correio.

Matos was born in Bethlehem, PA, and moved to Rio de Janiero to pursue diving, becoming the 3-meter champion in 2013. "I knew I was gay from a young age, but it was here that I got to live my sexuality," he revealed to the paper.

Friends advised him to stay closeted until after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio but the 24-year-old said hiding boyfriends, avoiding gay parties and not being himself was too draining.

Matos praised the example of fellow diver Tom Daley, and hoped coming out wouldn't affect his future in the sport or any possible sponsorships.  "I don't think it will hinder me, but I can't just think that the world agrees with me," he said.
