Illinois Kicks Off 2020 With Gender-Neutral Bathrooms

Single-occupancy bathrooms in public places must now be marked as "All-Gender."

Illinois is leaving gendered single-occupancy bathrooms in 2019.

The Equitable Restroom Act went into effect on January 1, which requires such facilities to be marked with signs labeling them as "All-Gender."

The law defines single-occupancy restrooms as all public bathrooms with a "fully enclosed room, with a locking mechanism controlled by the user, containing a sink, toilet stall, and no more than one urinal." The new guidelines apply to pre-existing places of public accommodation, such as hotels, restaurants, and bars.

Public places will still be allowed to have men's and women's bathrooms in addition to the gender-neutral option. The Illinois Department of Public Health and health inspectors have been charged with checking to see that the law is being followed.
